Gibson County CWJC

A Brief History
Christian Women's Job Corp is a ministry of Women's Missionary Union.  The idea came in 1993 when WMU interacted with impoverished women in Chicago, Illinois and the Appalachian region of Kentucky.  In 1994, they began developing a program to assist women in breaking out of the cycle of poverty.  The first participants began a pilot program in January 1996.  By March 1, 1997, CWJC was officially a thriving ministry providing women with a path to self-sufficiency in a Christian context.

In 2000, the WMU of Gibson Baptist Association had a vision for CWJC in our county.  Prayer warriors began meeting and praying, and in 2001 the vision became reality.  In April 2003, the first site coordinators were certified, and Gibson County CWJC became a nationally certified site.  In 2018, we moved our thrift store to its current location.  As of 2021, we celebrated 18 years of ministering to women in the community and 5 years of ministering to women incarcerated at the Gibson County Correctional Facility.

Currently
We remain one of the oldest existing sites out of 19 in Tennessee and over 200 nationally.  We occupy over 6,000 square feet in a prime location in the Davy Crockett Mall where our office, classroom, and thrift store are all housed.  We offer "Powered for Life/Jobs for Life" which includes Bible Study, as well as life skills and job preparedness skills, both in our classroom at Twice Blessed and at the Gibson County Correctional Facility.  We also network with other agencies for additional resources as needed.

In 2019, Gibson County CWJC acquired a transitional house for women coming out of incarceration and rehab facilities to equip and prepare them to live independently and successfully in society.  This is a 6-12 month program depending on the circumstances and individual needs of the residents.

It is our hope that we will continue to be able to depend on our community for the means to support this ministry as we receive no government assistance.  We are not only dependent for monetary support but also for volunteer support to help with the residents needs of transportation, mentoring, and teaching.
